COLLEGE ESSAY · WHY US

How to Write the Why This College Essay

The Why This College essay asks one question: what will you actually do here that you could not do somewhere else? Strong answers name specifics. Weak ones praise reputation, ranking and weather.

Key takeaways
  • It tests two things: whether you researched the school, and whether your interests fit it.
  • Name two to four specifics, each developed. A list of ten course codes reads as copy-paste.
  • Skip rankings, reputation, weather and campus beauty — all true of fifty other colleges.
  • Find specifics in the course catalogue and department pages, not the admissions brochure.
  • Leaving the wrong college name in is the most common failure. Write each in a separate document.

What the Why Us Essay Is Really Testing

Two things. First, whether you have done real research, which colleges read as a proxy for whether you will enrol if admitted. Second, whether your interests have a shape that this particular place fits. An essay that could be sent to five colleges with the name swapped answers neither.

What to Name — and What to Skip

Name this Skip this
Specific courses beyond the intro level
“Excellent academics”
A professor’s actual research, and why it interests you
“World-class faculty”
A named program, lab, centre or study-abroad track
Rankings and selectivity
A specific club, publication or tradition you would join
“Vibrant campus life”
A requirement or structure that suits how you learn
Location, weather, campus beauty
Something you have already done that connects
Anything true of fifty other colleges

The Structure That Works

  1. Open with you, not them. One or two sentences on what you are already doing or curious about.
  2. Connect to two or three specifics. Each one gets a sentence of why, not just a name.
  3. Show the next step. What you would do there — join, build, study, continue.
  4. Close forward. No flattery, no summary of the college’s virtues.

Two to four specifics, properly developed, beat a list of ten. A long list with no explanation reads as copied from the website, which is usually exactly what it is.

Where to Find Real Specifics

  • The course catalogue, not the admissions brochure — read actual course descriptions
  • Department pages for faculty research and labs
  • The student newspaper, which shows what campus actually argues about
  • Major requirements, which reveal how the curriculum is structured
  • Notes from a campus visit, tour or info session

The Mistake That Sinks These Essays

Leaving the wrong college name in. It happens every year, it is immediately disqualifying in the reader’s mind, and it is entirely avoidable: write each Why Us essay in a separate document and read the final version aloud before submitting. Our supplemental essays guide covers how to manage that across a full college list.

Building the list itself is upstream of all of this — see our college counseling service for how we approach fit.

FAQs

Usually 150 to 400 words, depending on the college. Some ask for as little as 50, which makes every sentence count.

Two to four, each developed properly. A list of ten course codes with no explanation reads as copy-paste research.

Avoid it. Every applicant could write the same sentence, which is exactly why it carries no information about you.

Only the structure. Every specific detail must change, and swapping the college name into an otherwise identical essay is the single most common way these go wrong.
