Key takeaways
  • 2 hours 14 minutes, about 98 questions, plus a 10-minute break between sections.
  • Reading & Writing: 54 questions in 64 minutes, in two 32-minute modules.
  • Math: 44 questions in 70 minutes, in two 35-minute modules.
  • The test is section-adaptive — your first module decides the difficulty of the second.
  • You can move freely within a module, but never back to a module you have submitted. There is no essay.

That works out to roughly 71 seconds per question in Reading & Writing and about 95 seconds in Math — noticeably more generous than ACT pacing, which is one reason careful workers often prefer the SAT. See ACT vs SAT for the full comparison.

The Reading & Writing Section

Every question is attached to its own short passage of roughly 25 to 150 words — there are no long multi-question passages. The domains, in rough order of appearance, are craft and structure (vocabulary in context, purpose), information and ideas (main idea, evidence, data in graphics), standard English conventions (grammar and punctuation), and expression of ideas (transitions and rhetorical synthesis). The conventions questions are the most learnable points on the test.

The Math Section

Content leans heavily on algebra — linear equations, systems, and functions — and advanced math such as quadratics and exponentials, with problem-solving, data analysis, geometry, and trigonometry making up the remainder. Roughly 75% is multiple choice and 25% student-produced response. A built-in Desmos graphing calculator is available for the entire section, and fluency with it converts many algebra problems into ten-second graph reads.

How the Adaptive Modules Shape the Experience

Module 1 in each section mixes difficulties, and your performance routes you to a harder or easier Module 2 — only the harder route reaches top scores. You can flag and revisit questions freely within a module, but once a module closes it cannot be reopened. The practical pacing rule is to leave two to three minutes at the end of each module for flagged questions. Our digital SAT guide covers the strategy in depth.

Test Day Logistics

The test runs in the College Board’s Bluebook app on your own approved laptop or tablet, or on a device provided at the test center. The app tolerates brief internet drops without losing work. Bring your admission ticket, photo ID, a charged device and charger, and an approved handheld calculator if you want a backup to Desmos.

A plan beats more practice. Let’s build yours.
