Not Sure Where to Start?

Start With Your Story, Not the Prompt

Most students stall because they are hunting for an impressive subject instead of a revealing one. Our first session is about finding the story only you can tell — then the prompt, the structure and the word count take care of themselves.

Three Ways We Work With Students

Personal Statement Coaching

The 650-word essay that goes to every school on the list. We work from blank page to final draft: brainstorming, structure, line edits and the honest feedback that makes an essay sound human. Typically three to five meaningful revisions.

Best for: every applicant.

Supplemental Essay Support

Ten applications can mean twenty-five separate pieces of writing. We map the full set, group the repeating question types, and work through them in the right order so nothing is written at midnight in December.

Best for: students applying to selective colleges.

Scholarship Essay Coaching

Scholarship essays answer a defined question and are judged against a different bar. We help students target the prompt precisely and make the case without overstating it.

Best for: students chasing merit money.

How Essay Coaching Works, Step by Step

1Free consultationWe talk through the student, the list and the timeline
2Topic sessionFinding the story only this student can tell
3First draftThe student writes; we stay out of the way
4Structural revisionDoes one story carry it? Is the reflection earned?
5Line editsSpecificity, voice, and the 650-word cut
6SupplementsMapped as a set and worked in the right order
The one rule we never bend

The student writes every word. Coaches ask questions, point at what is vague, and push for the detail that is missing — but we do not write sentences. That is both the ethical line every college expects and the only way the essay ends up sounding like a real person.

Why the Essay Decides Close Calls

College Essay importance

Grades and test scores tell a college what a student has done. The essay is the only part of the application that answers who is doing it — and at selective schools, where thousands of applicants have near-identical transcripts, that is frequently what separates them. In an era of AI-assisted writing, a specific, genuinely human voice has become the rarest thing in the pile.

College Essay Coaching FAQs

No. Coaches guide brainstorming, structure and revision and give honest feedback. The student writes every word — that is both the ethical line every college expects and the reason the essay works.

The summer before senior year is ideal. Most supplemental prompts are released in August, and starting then avoids writing school-specific material during the busiest term of high school.

It varies by student. Most work through three to five meaningful revisions of the personal statement, with separate sessions for supplements. Some arrive with a draft and need two; some start from nothing and need more.

Yes. We support Common App personal statements, University of California personal insight questions, school-specific supplements and scholarship essays.

That is the most common starting point and the part coaching helps most. The first session is a conversation, not a writing exercise — we work through routines, objects, disagreements and responsibilities until something surfaces that only they could write.

As a reader, yes — testing whether a topic holds, flagging vague passages, checking grammar. As a writer, no. Application platforms require the work to be the student’s own, and AI-drafted essays read as fluent and interchangeable, which is the opposite of what the essay is for.

Reading it is fine and usually helpful. Rewriting it is not — readers can tell, and an essay polished by an adult loses the voice that makes it work. We give parents a clear role: react honestly, do not rephrase.

Yes. Sessions run online for students anywhere, and in person at our office or in homes across Overland Park, Leawood, Prairie Village, Olathe and Lawrence.

School counselors manage transcripts, recommendations and deadlines for hundreds of students at once. Essay coaching is one-to-one time on a single piece of writing, with the hours to go through several drafts properly.

Your story is already there. We help you tell it.
